The abhorrence of the NUS

(Part I of what I assume will be too many to count.)

Leading Conservative young ‘un Edward Keene has written a report on the NUS Extraordinary Conference last week on Facebook that has been reproduced on Tory Bear.  Tory Bear has somewhat misnamed it, because what Ed says is important for any student to take on board, whether they’re in Conservative Future or not.

Although Ed has a long track record in student politics at Nottingham University, and now the College of Law, I think it’s fair to say that he’s sick to the back teeth of the NUS’s bureaucracy and leftism.  Relating the words of an ‘observer’ from the Australian NUS:

In MacFarland’s words “You had Margaret Thatcher, the US had Ronald Reagan, we had John Howard…[who led] a rampantly conservative and neo-liberal government.” He described these three like a triad of pure evil, nefariously pulling the strings of the ‘global system’ (which Marxists so love to theorise over) to the ruin and destruction of all civilisation. I personally take great pleasure from the knowledge that in a hundred years time Thatcher and Reagan will be remembered as two cold war warriors who defended the freedom of the west, threw out the rot of socialism at home, and defeated abroad the communist machine which had taken over 100 million human lives in the twentieth century.

I’d say more than a hundred million, but I’ll defer to Ed’s rhetoric!  He sums up with:

Despite my…er…constructive criticism, I would still recommend NUS conference to those who want, for whatever reason, to observe rampant leftism at its very best. Truly, it is good for little else than as such a menagerie.

Well, quite.  Ed’s hit the nail on the head - and that’s exactly why we want out.  Ed is an admin on the Facebook group NO to NUS, which asks the question: should we be in the NUS at all? (clue: we shouldn’t)  Every university, up and down the land, should ask the same question in the form of a referendum every year - as students are entitled to seek from their local union.

Make a difference and fight against socialism on our campuses by defeating the NUS!
